There is so much to see here that many experts called this city a 'MUSEUM CITY ' with some of the world's oldest inhabitated houses .There is still an "Arabian Nights" quality about the town. The narrow streets in the walled city preserve a traditional way of life; the craftmen still work at the ancient crafts of weaving and stone carving, the making of silver Jewellery and Embroidery.

GOLDEN FORT: This beautiful and only living fort of India was founded in 12th century by Maharawal Jaisal.It is the ninth and the last capital of Bhatti Rajput rulers who were the descendents of Lord Krishna's clan.It is famous for its prestigious history, unique beauty and Johar which was one of the bravest and courageous act of Women of Rajasthan to maintain their pride and prestige.The fort is the second oldest in Rajasthan.It was constructed on a triangular hill and stands 250 feet above the surrounding ground.No any cement, lime powder,mortar or clay has been used in the construction of fort.Solid blocks of yellow lime stone have been used for a buttress wall,15 feet high round the hill.This fort has seen many wars and battles.There are 99 circular bastions,three massive walls and five big canons guards the fort.One has to pass through four gates to

reach the main courtyard of the fort where one feels himself in the past royal days.There are many palaces, temples, wells inside the fort.Every single house of the fort is a monument in itself.There are 5000 people residing in the walls of fort with all modern facilities

GADISAR LAKE :About 1km south of the city walls, a famous rain water lake known as Gadsisar.It was built by Maharawal Gadsi in 1367 A.D. A natural low-land was dammed to catch every drop of rain water. This lake played a vital role in the life of the people of Jaisalmer in the past as it was the main source of water supply for the city. The beautiful gateway which arched across the road down to the lake is known as Teelon-ki prol or the Gate of Teelon which was constructed in 19th century by a very famous courtesan named Teelon. There is a small temple of Lord Vishnu on the top of the gate. The carvings of the window and archway is remarkable and delicate.The carving looks like it has been done on sandalwood not on yellow sandstone.Festooned all around the lake are many small shrines and temples mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu and a wonderful plumage of birds can be seen here in winter.

AMAR SAGAR: 5 km. North-west of Jaisalmer is Amar sagar .An enchanting place beside a lake,with mango and other fruit trees.The dam made of massive blocks of golden sandstone with big stone elephants and horses here is a remarkable work of craftmenship On one side of the dam is beautiful lake with many beautifully carved wells, Chhatrie and Jain temples and on another side of the dam is a Royal palace, Shiva temple,a beautiful swimming pool and a garden with palm and fruit trees. Maharawal Amar Singh of Jaisalmer built this beautiful place in 1740 A.D. He built a lake and a Shiva temple.The Shiva temple was constructed purposefully near the lake so that after a dip, the king could go and worship in the temple.

BARA BAGH: 6km. North of Jaisalmer lies a fertile oasis surrounded by densely grown trees with a pretty lake and a huge old dam which seems unbelievable in the middle of the plateau region.Much of the city's fruit and vegetables are grown here and carried into the town everyday by colorful dressed women.Above the gardens are royal cenotaphs with beautiful carved ceilings and equestrian statues of former rulers on horse-back.This is the place where member of the royal family were cremated. It was built in 1554 A.D. by Maharawal Jait Singh. In the early evening,this is a popular place to watch the setting sun turn Jaisalmer a beautiful golden brown.

KULDHARA Kuldhara is located about 18 km to the west of Jaialmer.Kuldhara is among those 84 villages which were vacated by the paliwal society in one night, 175 years ago.This village was established by Kuldhar sub-caste of Paliwal Brahmins in the year 1291 A.D. It was once a prosperous village of 600 houses and having a population of more than 2000.The Paliwals had deserted their original homes in Pali and Marwar for repentence so that the souls of the dead could rest in peace.

Due to their hard work,the Paliwal Brahmins attained prosperity in a short time.They were renowned for their hospitality and generosity. These people, with their hard work and intelligence made karen [small dams] near small hills. They developed farming and filled jaisalmer with grains and water. They used to do animal rearing, business and banker work. They made a lot of donations to charity and built dharamsalas (religious inns) and mansions. They were looted several times. One of their daughters were also kidnapped. But the king did not respond to their complaints. Due to this, all paliwal became annoyed and in the year 1825 A.D. after 535 years of their stay in the village they abandoned it once again to move to other parts of the country leaving all their property in the village. They never returned.

LODRUVA Lodarva is 15Km away from Jaisalmer in the North west driection and is an ancient palace. There are jain temples, shiva temples and ancient house remains which are worth seeing. It is said that lodarva was established by the lodra or rodra cast of rajputs. It is situated on the bank of the kak river. Due to the river, there was plenty of farming. The city was beautiful and rich. In the 12th century, mohammed gauri invaded lodarva and destroyed the city. Raja bhojdev was also killed. Later bhojdev's nephew jaisal built a new fort called jaisalmer. Lodarva is a religious spot for the jain community. The temples which were destroyed in the war were rebuilt by businessman[ghee sellers]. Tharushah in 1675 V.S. It is said that tharushah gave gold equivalent to the weight of stone statue in return for the labour. In the temples, the statue of parshvanath is made of white stone and the diamond studded on the head of the statue is also attractive. The entrance of the temples, has an artistic 'Toran door'. In the walls, pillars of the temples are the various god/ goddess figures and flower leaf shapes, which are rare and extraordinary. The spectatores became speechless after seeing these figures with their long raised necks. Near the temples there is an artificial kalpvrakash. Here many brids, tigers, goats cows and other animals are shown together kalpvrakash is a syombol of happiness, prosperity, peace of jain religion and culture. In lodarva, near the kak river, there is a temple which is half buried in sand has a statue of shiva which has 4 heads. The love story of moomal-mahendra is a famous love story of rajasthan. A cemetary [meri] is also built near the river in memory of them. This love story is described in pages ahead. Apart form these, lodarva has the remains of ancient houses, wells, ponds, bathing places etc
